End-User: Capitol Lighting E. Hanover
Installer: Forest Electric and IBEW
Location: East Hanover, NJ
Date of install: March 2004 – May 2004
Size of system in kW: 100kW
Energy produced since installation
Special Challenges Met: 1) roof structure 2) installation during winter
Capitol Lighting is a retail specialty lighting showroom. Capitol Lighting consumes a large amount of energy when displaying lights to customers. TurtleEnergy designed a Photovoltaic system to be installed at Capitol Lighting by Forest Electric (Union Contractor) who teamed with IBEW (local 102).
TurtleEnergy undertook a detailed analysis of the site. This analysis was comprised of the following steps and implementation.
Optimal System Design and Concept Planning
Industrial Design of the Components of the System
Multi-Disciplinary Coordination with Architects, Structural Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and Construction Managers (Stellar Energy Solutions)
This renewable energy project was implemented during the winter season. The building had a roof that presented a unique set of requirements and challenges for the installation of a Photovoltaic system. TurtleEnergy engaged Harrison Hamnett, PC to verify compatibility of the roofing structure with the proposed Photovoltaic system. A roofer was contracted to install the PV mounting system and Stellar Energy Solutions provided construction management as well as sales management to Capitol Lighting.
The project commenced in March of 2004 and was successfully completed in May of 2004. The Capitol Lighting East Hanover project implemented one of the first uses of a Satcon Inverter in NJ. The size of the PV system for Capitol Lighting East Handover is 117kW.
The first use of Fat Spaniel’s integrated Satcon inverter direct internet-based monitoring system was implemented at Capitol Lighting East Hanover. The Fat Spaniel data acquisition illustrations show snapshots of the actual energy generation by the PV system for Capitol Lighting. These measurements are in compliance with the predicted analysis done by TurtleEnergy and in some cases slightly exceed the target energy output range. Data monitoring results are available both on a real-time and historical basis. Measurements can be viewed on daily, weekly, monthly, yearly or lifetime intervals. The installed PV system has successfully helped reduce the on-grid energy usage and lower cost for Capitol Lighting.
